A priest also sings Shomyo before and after the above Gongyo.

It is permissible to chant only Daimoku a few minutes when you are pushed for time. But I recommend the above Gongyo until the time you have gotten a strong faith to the Lotus sutra and have been released from a certain suffering. So the 90 days practice is necessary to become a member of Kempon Hokke. If you need MP3, please request to me.

Meditation While in chanting Daimoku

As Nichiren shonin described in Gohonzon,

Example:

1.You place the Four-Quater kings in the cardinal points to draw a boundary for protection against evil at first.

2.You send for guardian deities, Acala and Ragaraja that destroy evil spirits. Acala changes your anger to justice, Ragaraja change your love and hatred to mercy.

3.Many gods beat a heavenly-drum and heavenly-flowers are rained from the sky.

4.Nichiren shonin and Nichijyu shonin and so on sit in front of you. Then invite the Buddha Sakyamuni, the Buddha of Many Treasures and four bodhisattvas together with them. A lot of your colleagues sit down with you and chant Daimoku with you.

5.You hear the teachings from the Buddha Sakyamuni and receive the five character of Myoho renge kyo.

*There are many wrong people who insist on that you should only chant Daimoku, saying that you need not practice meditation. Many believers of Nichiren shonin have been being influenced by ignorant priests of Nichiren school and teachers of SGI that say Daimoku is a super mystic word to become a Buddha. They insist on that "To mix other practices with this Namu-myoho-renge-kyo is a grave error", by quoting "Reply to Ueno-dono" (The Teaching for the Latter Day). But this is the doctrine of SGI/Nichiren Shoshu, and this Gosho is not authentic writing, which is in Taisekiji, Nichiren Shoshu.

See Kanjin Honzon Sho,

Question (12): Now I would like to know the meaning of spiritual contemplation (Kanjin) of the "3000 existences contained in one thought."

Answer: Spiritual contemplation (Kanjin) means for one to meditate on his own mind, observing through it ten realms, from the hells up to the realm of Buddhas, all of which are by nature contained in every mind.

Above is the explanation about Tendai's Kanjin.

Nichiren's Kanjin Honzon sho is the explanation to meditate Honzon on your own mind.

See Kanjin Honzon sho,

The Honzon is the most venerable scene that the Eternal Buddha is transmitting "Namu Myo-ho ren-ge kyo" to His original disciples. Suspended in the sky above the Eternal Buddha Shakyamunifs Saha world is a stupa of treasures, in which Shakaymuni Buddha and the Buddha of Many Treasures sit to the left and right of gMyo-ho ren-ge kyo.h They are waited on by four Bodhisattvas such as Jogyo representing the original disciples of the Eternal Buddha called out from underground. Four more bodhisattvas including Manjusri and Maitreya, take lower seats as followers, other great and minor bodhisattvas ~

After writing this Gosho, Nichiren shonin showed Gohonzon (Mandara Honzon). Mandara is used as an aid in meditation. Therefore, Nichi-ju shonin transmitted "The way to attend a lecture in the sky above Eagle Peak."

1)
First, the most important practice is to chant Daimoku. It is to plant the seed in your mind. Namu means "devoting." You have to vow to keep and spread the Lotus sutra which is Buddha Shakyamuni's will.

2) While you chanting Daimoku, please practice meditation of the scene of Eagle Peak where the Buddha Shakaymuni gives the Lotus Sutra for us. Nichiren shonin says that the Honzon (Gohonzon) is the most venerable scene that the Eternal Buddha is transmitting "Namu Myo-ho ren-ge kyo" to His original disciples.

* Meditation has two types. Therefore, you often may chant Daimoku slowly to calm your mind, thinking nothing.

3)
Please practice meditation of the five character of Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo which includes all of wisdom of the Buddha Shakyamuni, thinking what kind of advice He gives you.

4) Please practice meditation of the repentance, thinking the cause of your suffering. If you realize those causes are delusions and illusions, your sufferings will disappear.

The Susokukan, the practice as the preparation for the meditation.

1. Keep your back straight, and sit in a cushion on the floor or sit in a chair comfortably.

2. If you want to sit with crossed legs, I recommend half-lotus position. Put your right foot on to the left thigh. Put your left hand on the right ankle.
Put the right fingers on the left fingers for making a regular triangle with the three points. Or make Gassho with hands.

3. Close your eyes, then leave them half-open.

4. Take deep breaths quietly from the nose, counting your breath "One" slowly.

5. Then, move a breath (‹C) from the forehead, through the brain and the spinal cord, to the Tanden (a point in the lower abdomen). After stop on the Tanden, exhale deeply together with evil thoughts. Breathe out from a mouth.

6. Count up to 10, focusing your attention on each breath only. You should not think anything other than your breath. If you fail it, you restart from counting "one."

*At least 30 minutes or 40 minutes will be proper time for this practice. If you could count up to 10 anytime, focusing your attention on each breath only, let's proceed to next step.
If you master Susokukan, chanting Daimoku also will be improved effectively.

The basic meditation as Mahayana.

1) The world you see is reflected by your mind. You should realize that there is no difference between your mind and the world.

2) All is vanity. Therefore, you should know that there is no difference between the two ultimately. On the other hand, there is each effect according to each cause. Therefore, you should know that there is a difference between the two.

3) Everything which happens in the world appears within the Buddha's wisdom quietly. You also should see the world without being influenced by the ego.

The basic meditation as the Lotus Sutra.

1) You should reflect on yourself deeply.

2) You should know that the Buddha knows all your behavior and always gives you teachings.

3) You should rethink your past sufferings and failures positively.
